Christmas Apps

Parents,

Below are two apps to download for Christmas

Adventure Math:   This app was 99 cents last I checked.  Same idea as Math Aliens and the Halloween app.  Just a new fun way to practice their facts.

Letters to Santa :  This is a FREE app.  We will write a letter to Santa on this app and then Santa responds to them over the iPad.   We will do this next week.  "Santa" usually responds within a day or two.

Please download this week end to be ready for Monday, December 12th.

Thanks,

Optional Halloween App

Parents,

This is optional, but a WONDERFULLY fun Halloween app for your students to practice their math facts on.   They are really doing wonderful in class!  Keep up the good work at home. I really see a big difference in their ability and I believe it is because of all the work you are allowing them to do on the iPads.

Here's the link.  It was 1.99 last time I checked for the iPad version.

Also, back up all your apps to your computer.  Apple is going to make some big announcements soon.

Reading & Language Arts Apps

Parents,

As each child is at a different level in their phonics/decoding abilities - I will send home individual apps for students to download at the beginning of the year, once I have had a chance to assess their abilities.

The following apps apply regardless of your child's reading/writing ability.

FlashGram:  This app will help your child identify the parts of the sentences we will be learning this year (noun, verb, adjective and pronoun).   They may not be quite ready for this app yet, but they will be soon.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flashgram/id288908796?mt=8

Smiley Sight Words:  Your child will be expected to master the Fry and Dolche reading words over the course of the year. This app has the most common children's reading words in a myriad of different lists to help them master their basic sight words.  You can then rate & record your child's ability to read the word with a thumbs up or a thumbs down.   Mastery is achieved when your child reads the word correctly three times.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/smiley-sight-words/id361006388?mt=8

ABC Word Families:  This app will walk your child through both short and long vowel word families.  Have your child start at the beginning and read, spell and write each word in the word family.  Then have them rhyme the word orally with you.  For challenge:  Have your child write and use the word in a sentence.  All of their spelling words for 1st grade are from word families (i.e. - same endings).

Words Free - Word Families:  Another way for your child to interact with word families, including unscrambling and spelling the words.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/abc-phonics-word-families/id371052413?mt=8

Fill in the Gap:  Adjust the settings to meet your child at their level.   On this app, your child must find and identify missing letters.   This can be at the beginning of the word, end of the word or the middle of the word.   An essential first grade skill.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fill-the-gap-smudge/id415104902?mt=8

Teach Me 1st:  A comprehensive app that reviews spelling, sight words and math skills with your child.   It follows the first grade standards and allows your child to earn "coins" to spend at the store as they master content areas.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/teachme-1st-grade/id355940964?mt=8

Analogies for Kids:  Wow, what a great app, but your child will need your help.   Last years first graders could do it independently at the end of the year, but needed individual help at first.   This app asks your child to recognize the pattern between two objects and the following two objects just like the SAT for college admissions does.   Try it yourself first to make sure you understand what they are asking.  If it is too hard for your child initially, don't worry - they will grow into it!  This is an app it's okay to wait until January to tackle.

Download these Math apps for your First Grader's iPad

Parents,

Please use this time over the summer to help your child get familiar with the iPad.  These are some of the apps we will be starting off with initially in our classroom.  Download the ones listed here to give your child a head start on reviewing and improving important MATH skills.  I recommend you introduce each app to your child one at a time to keep the activities fresh.  Your child should practice 10 minutes a day.

As of June 29th (the day I am posting this blog), the total cost of the apps below is $9.00.  Please note the prices are subject to change.  I have roughly 5 more that I will ask you to download over the course of the year as their ability increases and as the seasons change (i.e. Halloween & Christmas specific ones).

Enjoy!

________________________________________________________________________

Math Series:  Practice putting the numbers in order up to 100.  Have your child move both in an increasing and decreasing order to demonstrate mastery of their numbers to 100.  If students master  counting by 1's, have them practice skip counting by 2's, 3's, 4's or 5's.  It's okay if they refer to a 100 chart beside them as they work through this.

Math Magic:  Use to practice addition and subtraction facts.  Increase the maximum number students add as well as the skill level as they advance.  Check how many they got right & wrong on the top right hand corner.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/math-magic/id291478690?mt=8

Kid's 6 in 1 Math:  This app has six excellent functions your child can rotate through, including basic counting, adding and subtracting (use the show hint function if your child needs to physically count objects to add/subtract), comparing numbers, the clock, etc.  Explore all of these functions as they are all essential first grade mastery skills. Move through difficultly levels as appropriate for your child.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/6-in-1-kids-math/id421147937?mt=8

KidCalc 7 in 1 Math Fun:  This is actually an iPhone app, but will work fine on the iPad.  Use the counting puzzles to help your child practice skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's over the summer. Once they go in order, switch the settings to random.  If they have mastered this, help them skip count by 3's.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/kidcalc-7-in-1-math-fun-including/id324332876?mt=8

Math Aliens:  A favorite from Kinder!  Practice your math facts in different ways with this engaging apps. Make sure to adjust the level as needed.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/basic-math-with-mathaliens-hd/id384258547?mt=8

Pizza Fractions:  Last time I checked, this one was free.   Use pizzas to help your child understand and read fractions.  We briefly discuss this in first grade, but we don't spend much time on it.  This is an excellent enrichment app to have your child reading fractions in no time.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pizza-fractions-beginning/id374084320?mt=8

Coin Math:  Excellent, Excellent, Excellent!  Regardless of where you child is in their ability to count and sort change, this app will help them.   Counting change is extremely difficult for children at this age, so spend some time with them, helping them buy items in the store and correctly sorting the change.  Then, use this model to sort and count change out of your own pocket.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/coin-math/id296596459?mt=8

10 Frame Fill:  One of the most effective ways to teach children to add quickly is to recognize numbers in sets of 10.  This 10 Frame fill (through practice) will help children quickly recognize the number combinations equalling 10.

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/10-frame-fill/id418083871?mt=8

Math Bingo:   Yet another way to practice math facts for your child.    Your child should master their math facts by the end of the year.

Welcome!

Welcome to the new first grade blog for St. Genevieve Elementary.   We are constantly trying to improve the way we teach and are looking to incorporate i-pads into the daily learning environment of our first graders in a 1 to 1 program next year.  As we begin to plan our curriculum, we are open to feedback about the best ways to incorporate i-pad use into first grade.   Let me hear from you.
